Our Nation’s Birthday Is Here!

Posted to Pam Marshall

The closer it gets to the 4th of July, the more excited I get! I absolutely love fireworks and get the Goosebumps when they start! I personally don’t have to go far to watch them and have sat in the same spot for 17 years – my neighbor’s driveway. I live on a double cul-de-sac and we have 13 neighbors and their families that all get together and experience this annual tradition. They typically have extended family members with them that are visiting, be it their parents, grown children or grandchildren. Everyone drags out their lawn chairs with blankets and/or sleeping bags for the kids to lay on in the street. We never worry about any cars since everyone is home. Click Here to see which cities are celebrating the 4th of July with parades, fireworks, etc.

Do you know where the famous Declaration of Independence was adopted and signed giving us our most precious gift – FREEDOM? It was at Independence Hall (originally the Pennsylvania State House) located on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is a red brick building designed by Edmund Woolley and Andrew Hamilton, built between 1732 and 1753. Besides the photo that I have attached to the blog, you can always see Independence Hall on the back of the $100 bill. Independence Hall’s bell tower steeple was the original home of the Liberty Bell. For more information on the history of the Declaration of Independence check out http://www.ushistory.org/Declaration/graff.htm

Vacaville's Finest Fresh Fruits & Vegtables

Posted to Tamara Hansen

Let me tell you where the finest fruit and vegetable stands are in Vacaville. Don’t get me wrong- there are more than this, but these are my top 3 right now!! Being from the Midwest, I am accustomed to fresh ingredients when I cook, plus I am particular on who I purchase my produce from. The 3 places I want to tell you about are well established vendors of Vacaville.

My first stop was to Fred’s Cherries on Elmira Road. Every morning they drive out to Lodi or Stockton to pick up the freshest, most delicious cherries. They have been doing this for 15 years, so needless to say they are doing something right. Fred passed away about 6 years ago, but his family continues to bring Vacaville delicious cherries. They are also very active in fundraisers, stop by grab some cherries and see about a fundraiser that will be healthy and profitable.

My next stop is the corner of Gibson Canyon Rd and Fruitvale, my favorite strawberry stand!! The prices are outstanding. I will warn you now, please buy at least one basket for you to munch on for the trip home. I live only 3 miles away so plan accordingly!! This strawberry patch is run by a very wonderful family. Each morning they pick and wash bushels of strawberries. Today I picked up the most delicious blackberries as well!! I pulled my favorite summer pie recipe out, strawberry pie with a glaze, toss a few blackberries in as well and top with fresh whipped cream!! Are you on your way yet!!

Last but not least Aliki’s Produce, on your way from the strawberry patch, follow Fruitvale down to Orchard. Look left to see open fields of fresh produce. Providing us with the most awesome tomatoes, lemon & Japanese cucumbers, melons, cherries, apricots, peaches, pears, grapes and plums in Season, local honey and herbs. I run here to get my fresh tomatoes and basil for my Caprice salad. The cantaloupe you can smell the minute you walk up to the stand. You can always find a beautiful bell pepper for stuffed bell peppers!! Okay I know you are hungry now, so head on out to Vacaville, California for our finest in fresh fruits and vegetables.

If you truly want to make the most of it head out on a Saturday to catch our Farmer’s market downtown. In our community we not only support our local farmer’s, we gather to see our neighbors and catch some local entertainment.
